THE OLYMPICS
The Olympics that we know of today started back in Ancient Greece. The Greek people dedicated the Olympics to the god and goddesses. Some of the traditions of the Olympics are the same and some of the traditions are different. For example some of the things that are different are, in Ancient Greece Olympics, the married women could not participate. Also the slaves and non citizens were not aloud to participate. Now today anyone can participate, but you have to try out and make it. You can go to the Olympics even if you are a married women. Also in the beginning the Olympics only took one day, now they happen every 4 years and are 2 weeks long. Some things that are similar are the events. We took the original wresting, running, jumping, and throwing from the Greek Olympics and we do them today. We have some of the original events, plus more. |
Trojan War
According the the stories that homer wrote in the Iliad, there was a Trojan War. This war was fought between Greece and Troy. According to the story, what started the war was a love story. According to the epic, the prince of Troy, Paris, stole Helen. Helen was the Greek king's wife. This just started the whole war. The war went on for 10 years, until the Greeks burned Troy to the ground. One thing that was significant about this war was a thing called the Trojan Horse. The Greeks gave the Trojans a gift. The gift was a giant horse. The Greek people were hiding inside the horse. In the middle of the night, the Greek people got out of the horse, and killed people of the town. Some scientist believe that the Trojan War did not happen. Scientist have found evidence of Troy, but not evidence of war. |
Greek mythology has a major effect on our lives today. Do you like to drink start bucks or gatorade? Have you ever orders anything of the website amazon or bought anything from pandora? Is your school mascot a Titan or a Spartan? Do you own anything Nike? Greek mythology is in our lives without us even knowing it. All the brands that are listened above came from Greek gods and goddesses. The lightning bolt on a gatorade bottle resembles Zeus. The "lady" in the Starbucks logo is actually a mermaid creature called a Siren. Nike is the goddess of victory, so it would make sense that Nike is a sporting clothes brand. Amazon was a race of mythical female warriors. A lot of team mascots are named after Greek people or things. This would make sense because they Greek people liked sports. That is why they had the Olympics. So weather you realize it or not, Greek mythology is tied into our everyday life. These are only some of the examples. There are many more.
